A Smoother Post for Justin

Posted in Music with tags , , on February 28, 2010 by The Buddha Rats

I just got an email from my friend Justin regarding “The Ballad of Buddha Rat” that I posted last week. He told me that he enjoyed the non-gravely vocal style, and I think he’s  got a good point: A mellow tune needs to have a vocal treatment that’s different from a fully orchestrated rock number.

So today I figured I’d post the original demo version of “The Belljar”. I never meant for this to be heard- I never finessed anything, certainly not the vocals. That being said, I think it provides a nice counterpoint to the electric version that’s been posted. The demo is just me and an acoustic: Mellow. Simple.

Enjoy.

Fit to post ’cause it goes softly in my head.

When It’s All Said and Done

Posted in Music with tags , , , on February 22, 2010 by The Buddha Rats

I wrote When It’s All Said and Done back in 2005. I had just bought the nylon Martin, and songs were coming at a decent rate. It’s a good little mellow love number, and it holds up well to my ears 5 years later.

Enjoy.

The Belljar

The Belljar was written & recorded in my home studio back in 2008. This tune’s a one man show: I played guitars, drums, bass and sing it like I’ve got sawdust in my throat.

It’s also in waltz time, and that was a bit of a departure for me.

My guitarist (Mitch) likes it, and that’s good enough for me.

Enjoy.

The Ballad of Buddha Rat

Posted in Music on February 15, 2010 by The Buddha Rats

Everyone should have a theme song, and on a nice Spring day in 2001 I wrote one for myself. It’s really simple (I was only just beginning to play guitar) but I still like it.

Mitch Is A Badass Guitar Player Part Deux

Posted in Music with tags , , on February 14, 2010 by The Buddha Rats

I love this tune. It’s an homage to Revolver era Lennon (or just shamelessly derivative), but either way you look at it, the solo by Mitch kicks ass!

We added his solo to my basic tracks back in late 2007 after a few rounds at the local bar. Mitch was playing his Custom Shop Les Paul with the Joe Walsh/Jimmy Page circuitry.

Marigold

I originally wrote and recorded this song Marigold for my EP “Rocket Carousel” back in 2002/2003. I was never happy with the original lyrics or the instrumentation, and over the years I (slowly) worked it out until I re-recorded it this past month. I enlisted my soul brother from another mother/guitarist friend Mitch to help out. I’m very happy with the results, so without further ado…
